A strong City reserve side yesterday brushed past Exeter City by a score of 6-3. 5 of the City goals were scored in the first half by David Clarkson, Plymouth loanee Gary Sawyer, fellow loanee Patrick Agyemang, Evander Sno from the spot and youngster Ashley Kington.
The second half saw just the 1 City goal with Tristan Plummer finding the net, who like Kington is expected to be released at the end of the season. The goals for the Grecians were scored by Stuart Fleetwood, Callum Butcher and James Norwood.
Newcastle United have been crowned the champions of the Coca-Cola Championship. The Magpies travelled to Plymouth, knowing a point would be enough to seal the title. The U.K travel restrictions meant that Newcastle the players had to make the extraordinarily long trip to Home Park by coach. Two first half goals were the difference as Newcastle won 2-0. They will return to the Premier League in August, following promotion straight away after the heartbreak of relegation last season.
Andy Carroll and Wayne Routledge's goals in an 8 minute spell were enough to see off Plymouth and relegate them to League One, where they could have many local fixtures with the possibility of Swindon, Rovers, Yeovil and Exeter being in League One next season.
City have announced today, that caretaker manager Keith Millen, will continue to take charge until the end of the season. Saturday's 3-0 defeat at Glanford Park, was the first defeat in 6 for City and Millen's first defeat in this spell. His only other previous defeat was a 3-1 defeat against Nottingham Forest, following Brian Tinnion's departure with Steven Gillespie scoring the City goal.
Steve Coppell has been hotly touted to take over the reigns at City for next season. The former Reading, Brentford, Crystal Palace and Manchester City manager would be an ideal choice for City. His stint in charge of Reading saw him take them up as champions, and expectation levels would be sky high should he be the man Steve Lansdown chooses to take the club forward.
Attention will now be drawn to the game on Saturday against Derby. With nothing to play for now, will the team see a shake up and a few faces who haven't been seen so often get a run out?
City reserves defeated their Reading counterparts 1-0 at Ashton Gate on Wednesday afternoon. Young midfielder Ashley Kington scored the decisive goal. City had 5 players with first team experience in the squad for the game. Brian Wilson, Evander Sno, Lee Johnson, John Akinde and Patrick Agyemang were the 5.
The first half was like a non-event, with Gunnar Thorvaldsson's strike in the last minute being the only shot of note as both sides cancelled each other out. Reading started the second half better and had a couple of shots with Hal Robson-Kanu unlucky to see his effort rattle the bar. The game needed a moment of class and Ashley Kington was the man to provide it on 69 minutes as he belted home a sizzling effort from 25 yards. The strike was made possible due to a set piece routine and will please the City coaching staff to see it working so efficently. John Akinde had 2 late attempts to beat Ben Hamer in the Reading goal but failed on both attempts with Hamer coming out on top of that particular duel.
A win for City Reserves in what wasn't the most prettiest of games, but will any of the senior players impressed enough to be in the squad to travel to Scunthorpe on Saturday?

Read More...City carried on from the promising draw against Newcastle with a 5-3 victory against Barnsley, to complete a league double over The Tykes with Nicky Maynard instrumental. Danny Haynes set City on the way after just 90 seconds heading in Marvin Elliott's cross from 15 yards. The lead was only to last for a minute as Barnsley hit straight back with Hugo Colace volleying Mark Robins side level. Things got even better for Barnsley as they took the lead through Daniel Bogdanovic's placed effort in the 25th minute. City upped their game and got the rewards just before half time as Jamal Campbell-Ryce marauded down the right hand side before clipping the ball back into the area for Nicky Maynard to get his head onto it to pull City level with his 15th goal of the season. A frantic 45 minutes at Ashton Gate and the players went off for words of wisdom at 2-2.
The second half saw City dictate the play and Maynard was sliding across the turf celebrating his second, ten minutes into the half with a far post diving header from Bradley Orr's cross along the face of goal. City had scored 3 goals from headers and the aerial prowess was causing Barnsley no end of problems. The impressive Maynard was to turn provider as his touch sent Danny Haynes to race into the box before caressing the ball into the net towards the far corner, to make it 3 past Barnsley keeper Luke Steele in 20 minutes. Ryan Shotton conceded a penalty and was sent off when the two sides met at Oakwell,he conceded another penalty when he brought down Nicky Maynard following Christian Ribiero's through ball with just over 15 minutes left. With Maynard and Haynes on a hat-trick it was thought that it would be one of them who would take the resulting spot-kick. The responsibility however was Paul Hartley's and he beat Steele with a cooly placed penalty into the corner of the net to score City's 5th of the night. Barnsley would pull a late goal back with Andy Gray heading home after some quality build up play, but it would be a consolation.
City came away deserved winners as they were just to much for Barnsley to handle as an attacking force. Keith Millen furthers his chances of getting the vacant managers job with every good performance. Peterborough United will pose a different challenge at London Road on Saturday though.
